Railroad history
Settlers arrived in the area in the 1750s. When the Danville and Richmond Railroad reached it in 1876, a depot, stores, a post office and a bank followed along Main Street, and the town took its name from a railway director. It was established in the 1880s.

Lake Cooley is a reservoir of roughly 330 acres in Spartanburg County, in the area between Wellford and Inman. Its park has a boat ramp, a fishing pier, a playground, picnic shelters and seasonal kayak and paddleboard rentals. Boating permits are required, and park hours change through the year.
